It marked Mbappe’s first five-goal performance in a competitive match for PSG. Our goal was to respect this team by playing to our level. I’m thrilled that we did that,” Mbappé said. For them and us, it was an important reminder that amateur football is something we should not lose sight of. No matter how long it takes.”
For the game at Lens’ home stadium, PSG coach Christophe Galtier rested world champion Lionel Messi in favour of World Cup top scorer Kylian Mbappe and Neymar. Mbappe and Neymar featured in PSG’s lineup, although Lionel Messi was rested, as Galtier stayed true to his word and selected a strong team ahead of Lens at their home stadium. The 26th minute was Neymar’s only yellow card, which he earned for a rash late tackle. Only a few minutes after Nuno Mendes’ cross, Mbappé put record 14-time cup winner PSG ahead of Galtier’s underperforming team.
Mbappe netted his second goal with a chipped lob and a sweet lob finish in the 33rd minute after Neymar scored PSG’s second. It was Mbappe who netted his fourth goal after a goalkeeper error in the 56th minute before Neymar assisted Carlos Soler midway through the second half, and Mbappé put the ball in from close range in the 78th. The last shot he attempted was blocked, almost leading to a double hat trick.
